Paper Space is a 4-page pop-up book consisting of paper cut-out dioramas based on film and TV depictions of historic events from the mid 19th century to the present. The book unfolds into a structure divided into four spaces—each housing one of the pop-up scenes.

Kota Ezawa is a kind of video, film and photography archeologist unearthing animations and still images that are hidden in archival footage. His projects have taken the form of digital animations, slide projections, lightboxes, paper cutouts, intaglio etchings, ink drawings and wood sculptures. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Madison Square Park in NYC; Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH; St. Louis Art Museum; Artpace, San Antonio; and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. He has participated in group exhibitions at MoMA, New York ; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; Art Institute of Chicago; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; as well as the 5th Seoul International Biennale of Media Art and the 2004 Shanghai Biennale. Kota Ezawa is an Assistant Professor at California College of the Arts and lives in San Francisco and Berlin.

The Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes is one of the most highly regarded women artists on the international scene. The basic motifs in her oeuvre are drawn from the abundance of the tropical environment and the history and culture of her native country. This is reflected in vivid compositions based on arabesques, floral and abstract ornamentation, geometric shapes, and rhythmical patterns in brilliant, magnificent colors.

Though painting forms the focus of Milhazes’s artistic activity, she also employs other media such as collage and printmaking, produces artist’s books, and designs textiles, building facades, stage sets, and interiors, such as one at the Tate Modern, London.

“I am an abstract painter speaking in an international language,” she declares, “but I am interested in things and forms of behavior that are found only in Brazil.”

One of my favorite photographers, Adam Bartos will surprise us soon with a new book published by Steidl.

Darkroom charts the physical and psychic terrain of photographic printing rooms while conveying their transition from the realm of pure functionality into historical artifact. Indirect portraits of both producer and product, Bartos’ work explores the physical space linking artist to artwork and linking the tools of the medium to the signs of their use. As more darkrooms switch to digital printing or close shop altogether, we become more aware that the tangible elements of darkroom printing may one day be lost. Bartos’ recent large-format work documents and explores in equal measure the visual language and ethos of that analogue printing culture before it slips beyond our experience forever. The acrid odour of chemistry, an uncanny stillness hanging in damp air – Bartos records the descriptive aspects and spatial constraints of the darkroom but also visualizes the lab as a site of limitless creative potential, invested with as much aura as a photographic print. Heroic and humbling at the same time, these portraits speak to the individuality of the workspaces and their inhabitants but also to the shared architecture of all darkrooms. Bartos presents us with the perceptual tools to know the darkroom as it is today and to remember it one day as it will have been.

Such a photographer is Rinko Kawauchi, who makes simple, lyrical pictures, so fresh and unusual that they are difficult to describe or classify. Her images documentary everyday things, yet could not be described as documentary. They are generally light in tone, yet somehow dark in mood. They are almost hallucinatory, yet seem to capture something fundamental about the psychological mood of modern life. To be sure, Utatane, the title of her book, means ’siesta’, which brings in the notion of a dreamlike state, and each image in the book could plausibly be considered as a still from a movie about a dream."

British artist Susan Derges engages with themes of alchemy, testing the inter-relation between the elements of fire, water, earth and air. Her beautifully crafted images reflect a holistic system that encompasses the human psyche and finds its metaphors through the natural world.

From 1980–86 Derges lived and worked in Japan, introducing the influence of Japanese minimalism which she combined with her discovery of ‘camera-less’ photography techniques. Her first major series, Chladni Figures, was created by sprinkling powder onto photographic paper made to vibrate with sound, making visible the shapes of invisible sound waves. Subsequent series continued to explore hidden forces and cycles of nature and her most frequently recurring subject is water. She captures the interference patterns in flowing rivers, the energy of waterfalls and breaking waves and the states of water from ice to cloud, from the solid to the intangible. Derges often uses the landscape at night as her darkroom. She submerges large sheets of photographic paper in rivers and uses the moon and flashlight to create the exposure. These images can appear abstract from a distance yet highly descriptive when seen close up. They confound a sense of orientation, questioning what is above or below and implying a dialogue between the microcosm and the macrocosm, or matter and spirit.

This book, edited by Martin Barnes, Senior Curator at the V&A, gathers together all of Derges’ major series to date and the key texts about them. Drawing from twenty-five years of work, the chronological sequence is creatively rearranged by the artist and grouped according to the four elements and the transitions between them.

... This book is a small collection of some of the work I have done for Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of the book Where the Wild Things Are. I met Spike around 1998 and I have worked with him a lot over the years. This usually involved creating piles of work that amounted to a very small contribution to the project. This never bothered me, because it was an incredibly creative, fun and rewarding process that led up to the scrapping of my work! I noticed a difference when I began working on Where the Wild Things Are. For the first time I felt that Spike and I were working on a project where I could actually contribute in a significant way. Much less of what I was making was being thrown away, which was a first. I was given the opportunity to interpret not only Spike Jonze’s interpretation of Where the Wild Things Are, but also Maurice Sendak’s original book. Like any kid growing up in the 70’s I was greatly influenced by Mr. Sendak’s books. His books are not just on my bookshelf they are in my blood. What I did with the titles, type treatments and marketing graphics also owes greatly to the heavy creative lifting done by Sonny Gerasimowicz who designed the creatures in the film and the Art Direction of K.K. Barrett.

In Dream Villa Singh explores how the night transforms what seems ordinary by day into something mysterious and unsettling. These lush photographs are saturated with intense color, they present a landscape which exists as much in the artist’s imagination as in the real world; Singh travels to many different cities never knowing where Dream Villa or its inhabitants will present themselves. The empty streets, the arrangements of neon lights and the silent façades have an unsettling and at times sinister atmosphere, this is a place where nothing is quite as it seems – it comes into being at night, when all is lit by artificial light and the moon is just ornamentation.

Publishing has also become a significant part of the artist’s practice: in her books, often published without text, she experiments with different ways of producing and viewing photographs. Until now Singh used primarily back and white photography – Dream Villa presents the largest single body of the artist’s color work shown to date.

Parcours Muséologique Revisité is Robert Polidori’s attempt to visually portray aspects of historical revisionism as seen through various stages of the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. With this body of work photographed over a period of 25 years, Polidori challenges the idea of restoring the palace to its original state. For Polidori, Versailles is not so much genuinely old as a constant re-fabrication of the old in order to keep the past alive.

Polidori states "With Versailles, I had the opportunity to witness museum restoration but I realized what was really going on was historical revisionism. What does it mean to restore something? It means to make something old new again… When you choose to restore a certain room as it was in a certain period, the period you chose is based on your contemporary worldview."

Robert Polidori was born in 1951 in Montreal, Quebec. He moved to the United States when he was ten and briefly lived in New Orleans in his teenage years. He now lives in New York City. He is considered one of the world's leading architectural photographers. His photographs of neglected and estranged cities including Chernobyl, Havana and New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina have received world wide acclaim. He is the author of several books, most recently Parcous Muséologique Revisté, an epic three volume collection of his Versailles published in 2009 by Steidl. He has been awarded the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography in 1999 and 2002 and the Word Press Award for his coverage of the Getty Museums construction in 1998.

Blumen is the second volume of Forest and Fields and moves away from the figure. Schorr decided instead to look for or build arrangements in the landscapes and domestic and commercial settings of her much investigated town. If people appear in Blumen, they are merely props in an examination of how objects and nature create dialogues within the communities they encompass. Flowers are uprooted so as to become performers in the landscape; signage, plums, chairs and a plaster fawn are some of the shapes of things moved and combined to further detail the daily life of the townspeople of Schwabish Gmund.

Gerry Johansson was born in 1945 in Örebro, Sweden. He has shown widely in Sweden, including at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, and has published numerous books of his work. Deutschland published by Steidl is the last part of Gerry Johansson’s nation trilogy. As in the previous parts, America (1998) and Sweden (2005), he investigates the country by studying the nameless and anonymous. Drifting from town to town, Johansson zooms in on the state of the nation. Where most of us see nobody and nothing, Gerry Johansson shows us everybody and everything.

GunGallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of color photographs by Asako Narahashi. One of the most discussed names in photography right now. The exhibition opened last Thursday, September 17 and will run until November 1.

Asako Narahashi's series half awake and half asleep in the water is a collection of C-Prints of various coastal sites in Japan. Since beginning the project in 2001, the artist has photographed over fifty locations with a Nikonos 35mm waterproof film camera. Narahashi floats chest deep in the ocean while facing back towards the shore, her camera held half-submerged in the water. By watching the waves without using the viewfinder, the artist times her pictures according to the swells of the ocean. Floating moments captured floating in the water, creating a new perception of reality.

From this vantage point, waves washing against the lens of the camera create unexpected relationships between water, land and sky. The images are suspended in moments of uncertainty, leaving a wide range of sensations for the viewer to experiment.

Asako Narahashi was born in 1959 in Tokyo, Japan. She began experimenting with photography in the mid-1980s. Work from this series is included in the current exhibition Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan at the International Center of Photography, New York. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Asako Narahashi currently lives and works in Tokyo.

Rabbits are the heroes and the pawns in this tale of biological warfare, based on a true story.

Written and illustrated by Allison Weiner, the type in Rabbitpox is hand set in Century Schoolbook by Allison and printed onto Mohawk Superfine paper with a Vandercook Proof Press by Pam DeLuco. Each book is housed in a handmade box of Fabriano Murillo heavyweight paper.

I am working on the new Sea Stars collection of Eco-friendly Art Mobiles. These are the materials I will use for that specific theme. I like to set up visual collages of the materials and photograph them. That helps me to sketch and develop better an idea. Lately, I have been reading and observing comparisons among Goethe's Theory of Colours and Isaac Newton's. This has inspired me to worked on a serie of illustrations using the colors of these fantastic blueberries. I love to find new materials, natural pigments and develop new green techniques. Speaking of blueberries, colors and light, My Blueberry Nights by Wong Kar Wai is also one of my creative inspirations.

I was amazed by the different colors, shapes, movement of the objects reflecting amazing shadows and shining with a really unique aura. All together giving a vivid sense of equilibrium and peacefulness.

The Imprint of the San Francisco Center for the Book is pleased to announce the upcoming release of its 2009 artist residency publication, Restless Dust, with words and images by Gail Wight.

Restless Dust will be issued as a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered artist books, each housed in a wooden box containing a multi-media installation. The body type is completely set by hand using metal type for letterpress printing while other elements are screen printed.

Wight's text invites Charles Darwin's ghost to sail to San Francisco and wander with her through the greater bay area terrain. The focus of the journey is three part: to celebrate the unique species of the San Francisco Bay Area; to look at the ways in which Darwin’'s legacy has impacted contemporary Bay Area culture; and to acknowledge the fragile and endangered state of many of our local flora and fauna caused by environmental degradation.

Gail Wight’'s specialty is experimental media art focusing on issues of cognitive science and the history of scientific theory and technology. She is the recipient of numerous awards, residencies and exhibitions, and is currently Associate Professor at Stanford University's Department of Art & Art History and Director of Graduate Studies in Studio Art and Experimental Media Arts.

The Imprint of the SFCB is proud to have Gail as the fifth artist of their ongoing artist-in-residence program. Once Upon a Book: The Creative Process of Children's Books

Once Upon a Book, showcases six acclaimed children's book illustrators in a new light - through doodles, sketches, mock-ups, all the way through finished art. Curated by Thacher Hurd, this is the second in a series of children's book exhibitions. This show explores the creative process in the work of six critically acclaimed illustrators: Elisa Kleven, Remy Charlip, Maira Kalman, David Macaulay, Chris Raschka and Brian Selznick.

The Ideal Sketchbook

This structure is modeled on the nineteenth century artists' sketchbooks and journals, similar to the ones used by Wordsworth and Ruskin as they wandered out into the Lake District fields to draw and write. An honest structure made simply and from high quality materials, it opens beautifully and is very durable. It can be made at home with no equipment, just a few simple tools, and since it is not 'cased-in' requires very little pressing.

The pages are made from good cartridge paper, ideal for pen-and-ink drawing, pencil sketching or writing. Working from full sized sheets, I have folded and slit the paper to give a beautiful, feathery deckle edge. I have sewn the book with linen thread on strong tapes, and sewn in a cloth hinge for strength. The book is rounded, for easy opening, but not backed, eliminating the need for a press. The case, or cover, is made from cushioned boards covered in strong natural canvas that can withstand all the hard knocks associated with going 'out into the field'.
