Colette's Orchid, 2008
36,5 x 50,8 cm / 14.38 x 20 inches
Signed and numbered (limited edition of 50)
Price: 148 US dollar

Yesterday, I received from Cara at iolabs the print proof of my illustration Collete's Orchid. I am amazed of their exceptional print quality. Because of Copyright issues, I need to do some small changes in regards to Miranda July's text. However, she has agreed that I can use a quote of her book "No One Belongs Here More Than You" with the book cited. I am a big fun of her work, as well as Mike Mill's eclectic artwork, the multidisciplinary film/commercial director and graphic artist behind the cover of July's book.

I have carefully chosen the image specialists at iolabs in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to create my prints, because of their efficient media usage, recycling programs, research in earth and friendly materials and practices, and community support. iolabs has a commitment not only to quality fine art reproduction but also to their responsibility for their impact on our community and our environment.

Giclée print/Ultrachrome print on Hahnemühle Bamboo 290 g/m2. Made from the renewable fibers of bamboo, it is more environmentally friendly than tree-based papers. This paper’s natural off-white, smooth finish offers exceptional print quality.

Pentti Sammallahti was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1950. He began taking photographs as a child and by the age of 21 he had exhibited both in Finland and abroad. He taught at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki for 17 years and retired when he received a 15 year grant from the Finnish government. He has exhibited extensively throughout the world since 1971. Notable among his more recent exhibitions was his inclusion in inaugural exhibition of “Les choix d’Henri Cartier-Bresson”, the 100 favorite photographs of the life of Cartier-Bresson. He is a master craftsman, meticulously printing and toning his prints. Sammallahti has published several monographs including the prestigious Photo Poche series, Pentti Sammallahti, # 103 (Actes Sud, 2005) and Sammallahti (Nazraeli Press, 2002).

Sammallahti describes himself as a wanderer who likes the nature of the great north, the silence, the cold, the sea. He likes the people and animals of far off places and he records the relationships of those people and their environment. One of the most distinctive elements of his work is the inclusion of animals - they wander into his photographs and then disappear as naturally as they appeared. Since 1979 Pentti Sammallahti has published 13 books and portfolios.

‘Informing Our Intuition: Design Research for Radical Innovation’
Jane Fulton Suri

Radical innovation requires both evidence and intuition: evidence to become informed, and intuition to inspire us in imagining and creating new and better possibilities.

The term ‘RESEARCH’ shows up in the context of design and innovation in multiple guises, not all of them positive. For some people it connotes ‘data collection’ – looking to the past and present but not to the future; for others it’s simply a required step before coming up with ideas; for yet others it’s a filter that rejects promising ideas before they’ve had a chance to evolve.

C R A F T I V I S M ~ E T S Y

The World Economic Forum nominated Etsy as one of their 2009 Technology Pioneers. Etsy's founder Rob Kalin will be traveling to Davos, Switzerland to represent the community and to voice Etsy's mission at the January meeting. The slogans "Art = Capital" or "Creativity = Capital," which Beuys often used in his artworks, could be understood as shorthand notations of his ideas, and suggest that creativity and art are the new currency for the transformation of society that he envisioned. The multiple La rivoluzione siamo Noi (1972), "We are the revolution," recalls Beuys' proclamation that "Art is the only revolutionary force." In this work, the artist seems to stride boldly into the future, urging us to accompany him on his way to the revolution. Definitely, Etsy is on the right path!

Alexander Girard ~ Vibrant Modern

Alexander Girard at work in his Santa Fe, New Mexico, studio in the early 1970s. One of his last projects for Herman Miller was to spruce up the Action Office with a series of Environment Enrichment Panels (seen here under development at 1:1 scale).

As director of the Herman Miller textile division from 1952 to 1973, Alexander Girard brought a passion for ethnic motifs and extravagantly bright colors to the clean, streamlined aesthetic that dominated mid-century design. Girard and his colleagues Charles Eames and George Nelson formed a team that transformed the legacy of American modernism. Girard's aesthetic, once iconoclastic, continues to inspire contemporary designers today.

I love these new Alexander Girard PLYprints® at velocity. Each panel (there are 6 to choose from) is hand screen-printed on sustainably-harvested maple plywood that cannot otherwise be sold because of imperfections in the grain. In addition to being eco-friendly, each panel is set up for easy hanging because it includes mounting hardware and a space on the back that allows the panel to float off of the wall.
